Results – who does what

The results for some qualifications are sent to us by the exam boards. Here's what happens to these results, and who does what at each stage of the process.

If you're unsure if we receive your results, check the list of results we get.

Who What happens
Exam board 1. Marks your papers (if you've chosen sat exams).
2. Sends results to your school or college.
3. Sends results for some qualifications to UCAS.
UCAS 4. Matches your exam results to your application.

5. Sends your results to your firm and insurance choice universities and colleges.

Unis and colleges 6. Check if your results meet the conditions of your offers.

7. Send their decisions to us – these are shown in your application.

Your school or college 8. Gives you your exam results.
You 9. Collect your results from your school or college.

10. Check your application to see if you've been accepted.

Summer results guidance

If you're expecting a result for a qualification, but haven’t received your grade

Contact your school or college first, they will be able to contact the awarding organisation to resolve the issue.

If you're an independent applicant, contact the centre who administered your examination or the awarding organisation.

Let your firm choice university or college know about your situation and ask them to hold your place while the issue is investigated.

If you have your results but your firm choice university or college hasn’t confirmed your place

First, check your offer to see if there are any other conditions outstanding such as completing a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

We receive exam results for some qualifications direct from the awarding organisations, and send these to the universities and colleges. See the list of exam results we receive.

  • If your qualification is listed above, and you do not have any other conditions, contact your university of college to discuss the situation.
  • If your qualification is not listed, you need to send your results to the universities and colleges. They may have a preferred method for you to do this (usually emailing a photocopy of the certificate) – check their websites or contact them to discuss this.

If you're continuing with your studies or expecting your results to be awarded after September 2023

Contact your firm choice university or college to discuss if deferring your place.

If you've been awarded a different level qualification to the one you entered on your UCAS application

If we send your exam result to your university or college (check the results we send here), we'll send the new result to them and they will make a decision based on this updated information. If they have not made a decision, contact them directly to discuss the situation.
